stress-free-yoga-immune-systemWe’re all busy! As I listened to conversations on TV about the late Tim Russert, one thing in particular caught my attention. Some guy was praising the fact that Russert was a person who pushed himself to and beyond the limit. My question is, was it worth it? And, I have to say, the answer must be no.

I see stress as a huge problem in today’s world. Not the stress that comes and goes in people’s lives, but the never ending stress that people live with day in and day out, and take tons of medication for. That’s the kind of stress that takes a toll on anyone’s immune system. Since one of the jobs of a healthy immune system is to help the functioning of other body systems and organs, it stands to reason that our important parts suffer when the defense system is out of whack. Surely this could effect the health of the heart itself.

So, you say eliminating killing stress is not that easy. You are so right! It may require everything from simple adjustments in a person’s life to massive life changing decisions. Everyone has to look at their own lives and make choices. You may just need to eat healthier. You may need to actually simplify your life. People have been known to just exit high-paying corporate jobs and cities with no regrets. Just know that a lifetime of continued stress is deadly, and you must be brave enough to deal with life by protecting yourself and keeping your immune system in the best possible health.

The food we eat has a great deal to do with our stress level and the worst offender is junk food. The same can be said for our immune system. I believe the proper functioning of all our body’s organs and systems begins with the immune system itself, and on the cellular level. Well, those cells need nourishment to do their job. When all they get is a giant mix of additives chemicals and foods that contain few nutrients, if any at all, they (we) are starving. Enter the bad guys, stress, depression, fatigue, cholestrol and dozens of illnesses.

So, you say eating better food is not all that easy. You are so right! It’s lots easier to eat the way most people are doing these days. And yes, it often tastes REALLY good too! The food people are not dummies. They’ve figured out how to make you love their money-making food and also how to get you to eat more and more of it. Isn’t science wonderful? Of course eating foods that are good and also healthy is going to take a little personal effort. Everyone gets to decide how important it is to them personally to protect their health by eating food that actually nourishes them and keeps them well. Then they actually eat that food.

Maybe today is a great day to begin. Think about what you eat. Know what goes into your mouth. And, when you get stressed out, think about that too. Take a deep breath (or cry if that’s what works for you) and look at the problem from a more objective angle. There you have it…..two simple things.
